Seize Your Moment

When I was in high school, I had the dream of traveling the world, one country at a time. Funnily enough, at that same time, I barely stepped out of my little town. I didn’t even explore the next town over. I kept making excuses like “oh, I don’t have a car and it takes too much energy to take the bus” or “oh, I don’t have enough money to do x, y, and z” or “oh, I have too much to do to spend time on adventures. I’ll do that later.”

Later meant nearly ten years later when I actually moved to a different city two hours away, making it even more difficult to do the things I wanted to do in that area.

It was when I moved that I met my now-husband Joseph. He was always taking advantage of every holiday and weekend possible by traveling anywhere he can. Since he was new to the city as well, we started by taking road trips to different parts of Southern California together – Joshua Tree, Solvang, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs – and then expanded the map. During long holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, he would go off on awesome solo weeks-long adventures to far-off places and come back with priceless memories.

He taught me to stop making excuses and take advantage of the present because ultimately, we will never know what can come up that will prevent you in the future.

If you’re tired of seeing everyone else’s vacation photos and wishing you could be there yourself, make it happen! Prioritize travel! Prioritize having those experiences yourself!

It’s one thing to see the The Great Wall of China in photographs. It’s another to step foot on the stones of the 3,000 mile structure that has been for more than 2000 years.

Or to feel the mist and splashes of Niagra Falls.

Or to wake up at sunrise and see the amazing Buddhist temples in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Or to devour (elegantly, of course) the baguettes of true French bakers.

Seize your moment

After dreaming for so many years, I’m so happy to be able to live those dreams. And believe me when I say that to actually experience travel is so much more satisfying.

As Charles Dickens once said,

“The most important thing in life is to stop saying ‘I wish’ and start saying ‘I will.’ Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities.”

Honestly, this is such an inspirational post, I used to have the same big dreams about travelling, but then I got into Med School and I always feel the need to study, I really admire some of my mates who just skip one week of classes and go to London or Milan. I guess I just need someone in my life to give me that boost to at least have a city break once in a while!

    Have an amazing week,
    Mary x

I love this post! It was so inspiring! My fiancé and I have been traveling one country at a time. Before I met him, I never ever ever traveled though. My parents always claimed we didn’t have enough money to (which was kinda true at the time).
